Wiki Book
Indesign Book Layout

WIki Book project translated one of the longest Wiki content “Dissociative Identity Disorder” into a book. Each chapter titles are treated as a identity of the book. Before a new chapter unfolds, chapter titles are cancelled out to highlight the chapter that follows. This system of the book was designed to represent the symptoms of DID.

THE MAP IS NOT A TERRITORY
AR Book

'The map is not the territory' is a phrase coined by Alfred Korzybski to illustrate the relationship between an object and a representation of that object. A map is just a description of geography, just as our sense of the world generated by our brain is a very incomplete model of what actually exists. In this project I explore  the dichotomy of things through a collection of essays and AR (augmented reality) illustrations.

Over the course of several chapters, this book delves into material such as Nick Bostrom's simulation hypothesis, Schrödinger’s Cat, and Jean Baudrillard's writings on hyperreality. The content has two different layers: One is the printed book and the other is conjured on a screen when recorded by a camera phone. Only by using AR technology can a reader complete the missing gaps of the puzzle. This project illustrates our provisional understanding of reality through the discrepancy of a tangible book and virtual space.

DID
Installation sculpture

‘Dissociative Identity Disorder’ is a piece that shows how people’s identities are composed of several layers like how people in extreme condition show as DID. DID is a psychological state with shattered identity in order to protect the traumatized original self. I wanted to bring this idea and generalize it by showing how most people often go through similar state of mind as they act differently to appear as certain character in different situations or hide themselves. I wanted the viewers to feel empathized and look back whether they have been hiding from their inner problems. I create this piece by using several images of repeated representation of the same conceptual meaning because I thought separated images expressed symptom of DID while also emphasizing the message. I used the Russian doll because the structure of it effectively visualized the multiple layers of DID. I also incorporated image of fetus and wounded person to depict the vulnerability of inner most identity.

Challenge
Installation sculpture

As I started living alone at the start of the senior year of highschool, I was overwhelmed by all the tasks I needed to manage at the same time. I usually kept track of the things I need to finish using my phone and I almost felt that I am trapped in the routine set out in the digital space. I wanted to share my problem and also tell the viewers that they are not the only when feeling the stress from everyday life through these three pieces. Objects in the first piece symbolize different tasks I need to complete on everyday basis. I wanted it to appear as some sort of a virtual room that I stack away different tasks in. I expressed my thoughts of wanting to postpone them and get away from the responsibilities they give me by painting the objects white so that they can blend in with the background. However, as the tasks that I have to handle will still remain there no matter how much I want to get away from them, I made sure that the objects were still visible.
